about

R-Self is comprised of compositions made in Pxtone Collage and Famitracker over the course of about a year. It also includes excellent artwork in the style of the games it was inspired by, by Christian Short, which can be previewed here: imgur.com/a/1giP0

The project began as a tribute to the fast-paced and energetic music of shooter games from the late 80s-90s. The first several tunes were composed in Pxtone Collage using FM synth instrument sounds from the Yamaha YM2413 soundchip found in Japanese Sega Master Systems, as well as sampled drums from a number of Sega Genesis games. The project began to slow down as I lost interest in Pxtone Collage and began working more and more with Famitracker, an audio tracker designed to emulate the NES and its various expansions.
In particular, I started to write songs using the VRC7 expansion, itself a derivative of the YM2413. As I gained more control over Famitracker and the VRC7, I wrote a number of tracks in various styles; these were meant more as individual works than to fit with a theme, and displayed more emotion and experimentation then my previous efforts. I eventually decided to merge them with the unfinished shooter project.

The result is R-Self - the name being a combination of "R-Type", one very well-known shooter from the arcades, and "ourself", an interesting nonsense word. It is a merging of two projects - made in separate software, separate styles, and at different time - into a single, cohesive album.

The artwork by Christian Short also displays both sides of the album: while evocative of the iconic art found in manuals and on box art during that era, it has its own unique and interesting style.
