about

I wrote this during a semester where musical ensembles couldn't meet due to covid, so the director had us do close listening and composition practice etc. instead. I enjoyed this but much of the ensemble did not...
I'm a violist, so I played some of this as I wrote. but a lot of it is actually pretty tough. I wasn't able to perform it very cleanly in the end.
at the beginning of this assignment, the director had us come up with three piece-beginnings and then choose one to expand--you can hear the other beginnings in a bonus track that comes with the download. I decided to make three musical "sketches" of three of the other musicians in the ensemble (though I did not tell them this lol). the first sketch (and the first person) were more to my taste than this one, but the ensemble responded well to this one, so I went forward with it anyway. it's a light sorta romantic theme, a nice change of pace from the other stuff I was writing around this time.
